Profession: In his mid-teens he joined the firm of James A White. shipbreakers and salvage contractors of North Queensferry. After military service he rejoined the company which subsequently moved to St David’s Harbour where he progressed into a managerial role.
Military Service: At the age of 18 he joined the navy, serving on several ships before transferring out and joining the Highland Light Infantry. He then entered the 13th Parachute Regiment with which he entered several areas of conflict and subsequently undertook peacekeeping roles. We know that he served in Burma, Malaya and Singapore, was present at the liberation of Denmark and was in Indonesia and Palestine after the war. He was proud of the fact that as part of the early liberation force in Singapore, he restored the clock on the tower of Changi Prison. He left military service in September 1947.
A reference provided by Major RL Garrent of the Highland Light Infantry wrote of him:
Conduct: Exemplary. A first-class man. His intelligence is well above average and he can be trusted to put his back into any job he is given. Sober, honest and most conscientious.
